the cops are coming to the albany landfill tomorrow, monday, to kick out the people who live there and initiate a 2-week period of 'cleaning up' the park which will entail the use of heavy machinery, i.e. tractors/bulldozers! it's possible that they will be attacking some of the artwork as well as they have mentioned time and time again that they want it gone and this is the longest cleanup they have scheduled since 1999.

if you enjoy visiting the landfill, if you like it the way it is, if you think the people there are not a blight and should be left alone, if you think there should be public process before any park 'shaping'; either call the city of albany offices (the mayor's home phone # is 558-9054)
-or-
come out tomorrow morning, probably by 9am, and join our protest at the landfill itself. we will film, harass, and try and get info. from the cops about what the plans are, who we should talk to, etc. and try and make them feel inhuman for evicting people right before the rainy season starts, and in a town that has no homeless shelter of its own.

come out many days over the next 2 weeks, see what the tractors will be doing, maybe we should have a meeting to discuss what our reaction should be. hopefully the city will be out of money for at least a year, and maybe it's time to launch an alternative plan for the landfill.
mad mark, the person who built the castle, said the other night: "this is the place where dreams come true, whoever would come here to destroy or tell other people what to do is very evil and i want to never come in contact with them." he has lived there for 15 years and he will be avoiding them in order to continue his peaceful lifestyle in peace, let's confront them for his sake and the sake of compassion for people who live outside.

Call for Content (Photos and Text) for Stencil Nation Book Project

In this Post/Email:

1. Introduction
2. General Rules for Submission
3. List of 7 Categories that Need Submissions
4. Details of Submitting for Each of the 7 Categories

...................... 1. INTRODUCTION ..............................................................

Hello Stencil Citizens,

Russell here from StencilArchive.org (http://www.stencilarchive.org ). If you have never heard of Stencil Archive, it is a web site that I created in 2002 to cover the international stencil art phenomenon. I have been photographing stencils since 1995, made them since 1998, and currently have over 7,000 stencil photographs (many of them are my own photos) represented on Stencil Archive.

But this call for art and content is not for the web site. I am working on a book titled “Stencil Nation: Graffiti, Community, and Art” which will published in Spring 2008 by Manic D Press. I am hoping that the community will step up and help me present the amazing scene(s) that have grown around stencil art in the past five years. While recent books feature stencils on and off the streets, Stencil Nation hopes to represent not only the artists and activists who cut and spray but also represent the other parts of the community that make our nation a culture unto itself.

I have 7 different areas of the book that need development. You may fit one or more of the below categories of our community, so I encourage you to tell me more about yourself and be a part of the Stencil Nation project.

Thanks for helping out. If any of this is confusing, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Russell

...................... 2. GENERAL RULES FOR SUBMISSION ..........................................

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: August 20, 2007
+++Feel free to submit art and information for any of the categories that relate to you, but make sure that you read each category's details before doing so.
+++ all submitted images must be 300dpi (high resolution) to be printed in a book. If you do not submit hi res photos, your photos will not be used. (Contact me if you wish to mail content to be scanned.)
+++ if you choose to remain anonymous, I will gladly use your tag instead.
+++ Due to the potential volume of submissions, I may not be able to contact you directly if there is a problem with your submission. If your submission is OK, I always try to get back in touch with the community. I hope to at least give you a simple "got it" reply and a thanks!
+++ Due to limited book size, all or part of your submission may not get in the book. If you are not included, I will make sure that you will be represented on the web site and in any show or event in conjunction with the book.
+++ Please pass this Call for Content on to people and places you think could help contribute to Stencil Nation.

1. Fans and/or Documentarians of Stencil Art

Do you love photographing stencil art? Do you go to the gallery shows, post your photos online (maybe your own stencil blog), and/or make stencil art/photography a part of your lifestyle? If YES, you're an official citizen of Stencil Nation.

Fans and Documentarians are encouraged to submit at least 10 of their favorite photographs of hopefully 10 different stencils.
Please answer the following questions:

Who are you and what do you do with your time?
When and where did you shoot your first stencil photo? Why?
Do you run your own stencil photo site? What is the web address?
Where, online and/or offline, do you go to get your stencil fix?
What does stencil art mean to you? How does it relate to your life?
Have you travelled to other places to find stencil art? What are your favorite places?
Any other comments, tips, or manifestos?

submit images and text, no later than August 20, 2007 to:
stencilnationbook[at sign]stencilarchive[dot]org

_________________ thanks _______________________

2. Beginning Stencilists

Maybe you where a fan who enjoyed photographing stencils, and decided to grab the Xacto and make a cut out. I know I did! Maybe you went online and used a tutorial you found, or asked a "How To" question on a stencil BBS. If you have made your first stencil in the past 3-6 months, then you're a welcome member of our great nation.

Beginning Stencilists are encouraged to submit at least 3-6 photographs of their first few stencils. Don't be shy! Stencil Nation will not flame you or rate you; we'll actually encourage you to keep making stencils so you can improve (and give you tips to do so).

Please only submit HiRes 300dpi versions of your photographs, and include location of the stencil (country, city, neighborhood), title of any artwork, and, if known, who the photographer is.

Please answer the following questions:

Who are you and what do you do with your time?
When did you cut your first stencil? What made you do it (an idea, boredom, etc.)
Are you putting your pieces online? What's the address?
What's your next stencil idea?
Did you use online/published tips to get started? Where?
Any great stories of getting up (doing graffiti)?
Any other comments, tips, or manifestos?

submit images and text, no later than August 20, 2007 to:
stencilnationbook[at sign]stencilarchive[dot]org

_________________ thanks _______________________

3. Teachers who teach stencil art

Are you an artist who teaches art classes? Have you ever incorporated stencils in your class programming, created a workshop for stencils, or helped kids make a stencil mural? If so, then you hold the honor of teaching the next generation the easy and fun skills of a great art form.

Stencil Teachers should submit 5-10 photographs of their students in action, and/or student's stencils (cut out or painted).

Please only submit HiRes 300dpi versions of your photographs, and include location of the stencil (country, city, neighborhood), title of any artwork, and, if known, who the photographer is.

Who are you and what do you do with your time?
Why did you start teaching stencil art? When was your first class?
Do you work within government funded programs? Have you had problems teaching what some think is illegal graffiti art?
What tips do you have for teaching people stencil art?
Can you share a great moment in the classroom?
Any other comments, tips, or manifestos?

submit images and text, no later than August 20, 2007 to:
stencilnationbook[at sign]stencilarchive[dot]org

4. Physical places where Stencil Nation congregates: galleries, gatherings, and fliers from these places and events

Do you run a gallery that has/has had stencil shows? Have you curated a stencil show in the last 5-15 years? Have you created or been part of a convention where stencil art was featured? If so, then Stencil Nation would like to feature our physical places of congregating.

Please submit 5-10 HiRes photos and images of your gallery stencil show, your stencil gatherings, and/or fliers of any events you've attend, produced, or hosted. Please only submit HiRes 300dpi versions of your photographs, and include location of the stencil (country, city, neighborhood) and, if known, who the photographer is.

What is your gallery/gathering's name? Web address? City and country location?
How long have you hosted, curated, produced stencil events?
What do you see as a significant influence on your hosting stencil events?
Does art on the gallery walls differ from stencils on the streets?
Any other comments, tips, or manifestos?

submit images and text, no later than August 20, 2007 to:
stencilnationbook[at sign]stencilarchive[dot]org
5. Your best tips for making great stencils

We all could use a bit of help from time to time. Now is your chance to tell Stencil Nation the perfect way to make a stencil. Know how to make the perfect stencil on a T-shirt? Know how to quickly put up an amazing stencil on an alley wall? Any and all tips are welcome for this category.

Please submit 5-10 of your best stencil-making tips. They can be about anything that would help a citizen artist make a better stencil. If it involves resources (videos, long/detailed steps with photos), please provide addresses for finding the item. If you have them, please give links to examples, further research, etc.

This section may not have photographs, but if you think that your Tips MUST have photos, please only submit HiRes 300dpi versions of your photographs, and include location of the stencil (country, city, neighborhood) and, if known, who the photographer is.

Please answer the following questions:
6. Stencil Nation seeks photographs of stencils painted on these items:
•	Stickers
•	Posters
•	Vinyl
•	Murals
•	Found Objects
•	The Cut-outs (actual stencils)
•	T-shirts, patches, shoes, etc.
ALSO: Stencil Nation needs creative buffed (painted over) stencil photos

This category is self-explanatory. Please submit up to 12 of your best photographs of stencils on any or all of the above objects. Please try to submit a different stencil for each different photo (this will give you a better chance of getting more than one photo published). For buffed stencils, the more creative the buff, the more likely it will be included. Is there a stencil on the buffed stencil? That will work too!

Please only submit HiRes 300dpi versions of your photographs, and include location of the stencil (country, city, neighborhood) and, if known, who the photographer is.

Please also submit the following for each image:

Give the artist's name if you know him/her.
A translation of any stencil text into English if needed.
7. Stencils from the past: photos and stories of stencils in the 20th century.

Stencil Nation is hoping to rediscover the roots of our community and seeks photographs of 1960's-1980's stencils. We know of some places where stencils where used, mostly as a form of protest, but currently have little/no documentation and photos:

•	Sandanistas of Nicaragua in the 1980s
•	Anti-Apartheid Movement of South Africa
•	Black Panthers in USA
•	1970s Punk Activists in USA, UK, and beyond
•	1980s Anti-Soviet protests in Poland
•	Mexican Student Protests of the 1970s
•	Berlin Wall Stencil art
•	Basque National Movements
•	Anti-Nuke protests of the 1980s

If you have any leads of photos or documentation, please contact us and let us know. If you have any photos, please submit them all if you can.

Please only submit HiRes 300dpi versions of your photographs, and include location of the stencil (country, city, neighborhood) and, if known, who the photographer is.
You've reached the bottom! Nifty....

The first 12 people who submit to one or more of the above categories and puts "sticker" in their email subject title, will get a sticker or two mailed to them. You need to give me our snail address too...

Again, you all are the reason why I curate Stencil Archive and am making this book. I hope that the world will soon discover our ad hoc nation. It may be the only nation where all you need to become a citizen is to appreciate stencil art. The rest, we can make up as we go along.

Remember, DEADLINE IS: AUG. 20, 2007

Sincere appreciation for your participation,
Organization: Reversible Eye
Deadline: August 05, 2006
Location: Chicago - city
Call Type: Exhibitions

Public Image Enemy -
Sep 15 to Nov 10 2006

Public Image Enemy is a multidisciplinary celebration featuring artwork, performance, and music which results from the collision and collaboration of Punk Rock and Hip Hop artists.

The art and music, performance, etc. will be a celebration of the 30th anniversaries of punk rock and hip hop cultures.
(We are using these terms in the broad sense, including the sub-genres and side-genres)

We will focus on the places where the two cultures borrow from eachother and / or collaborate with each other. We are interested in hip hop artists that are influenced by punk and punk artists that are influenced by hip hop. Regardless of how much stylistic crossover there is, we are most excited about bringing the two cultures together in one forum.
Artists from each camp who don't normally work with each other have already started collaborating in preparation for this series.

Art - the art will feature graffiti art, stencil art, silkscreen art on the walls and on paper - bringing together works from the punk/ experimental/ underground rock communities and the hip-hop/ urban art-forms communities.

Music & Performance - bringing together breaking, punk/ experimental/ underground music groups, emcees, deejays, beat-boxers, performance art, and more.

Hello Friends!

Now after recovering from a two month avalanche of writing jobs, I'm taking on new clients for script and book work.

My company is WRITERSSOURCE.NET. I do a wide variety of creative and business writing, but my best work is done analyzing/doctoring books and scripts. You can check out my bio and testimonials from happy customers at WRITERSSOURCE.NET.

In addition, the last two months have been phenomenal! I finished my modern day fairy tale "London Fog" and became a finalist at the International Moondance Film Festival with it. London Fog is getting a lot of positive attention.

I've done six freelance writing jobs, one being an ongoing project whereas I'm developing a great screenplay. (The story has already been bought by a production company.)

I just became an assistant director (and possibly a co-producer) of Star Trek Voyages episode "World Enough and Time", written by Marc Zicree and Michael Reaves, and starring George Takei - pretty dang exciting.

I am also producing/writing and directing a documentary with Marc Zicree on the making of New Voyages called "Elvis Made Me Do Star Trek". (If you look at their website you'll get the Elvis reference.) Not to shabby!

If you need any more convincing go to the website and check me out! Otherwise, please don't hesitate to e-mail or call.

Have a super-great-wonderful-summer!
Knitta, Please!
Hitting the streets with Montrose's craftiest taggers
By Keith Plocek

Keith Plocek
The prep work can take hours.

Keith Plocek
That'll keep that antenna nice and warm.

Keith Plocek
A half-finished baby blanket becomes a tree-hugger.

Who / What:
Knittas
She's always been an impatient knitter: half of a blanket, a quarter of a hat, a sliver of a scarf. She has to intertwine her hobby with a full-time job, a daughter and a boyfriend. Last May she began working on a baby blanket for an expectant friend; by September the baby was out and the blanket was only halfway done, even though she'd found time to stitch plenty of cozies and coasters in the meantime.

"I get bored and antsy," she says, "and that's why I probably have about ten different projects going at once."

These unfinished swatches of comfort and color used to be scattered around her house -- fuzzy testaments to crafter's ADHD -- but two months ago she figured out a slightly illegal, completely irreverent way to get rid of them: graffiti. Knit graffiti.

One night she went out with another Montrose mom and stitched a pink-and-purple cozy onto a boutique's door handle. It was an act of artistic defiance, a soft, warm tag in a part of town dominated by aerosol arrogance. Other swaths began appearing on street signs, car antennae and park benches, and word soon got around there was a new crew of taggers in town.

Their noms d'artiste are AKrylik and PolyCotN, but you can call them Knitta.

The back of Poly's house is rumbling. Her kids are playing dress-up with AKrylik's daughter, and each new outfit is announced with an explosion of giggles and a sprint to the mirror. The two moms are fairly oblivious to the fashion show, save for the occasional "You look great, honey."

Poly and AKrylik wish to remain anonymous, but we can tell you they're both working mothers in their early thirties, both attractive and both brunette. They almost look like sisters, sitting on the couch at Poly's house, knitting and talking about how their graffiti differs from the spray-can variety.

"It's considerate to the victim," says Poly, rifling through a bag of yarn. "If they don't like it, they can just unbutton it."

"It's not vandalism," adds AKrylik, fiddling with her baby blanket. "I almost wish there was a little more permanency to it, that it was a little harder to remove."

On the coffee table is a morass of stockinette coasters and cozies. Each item has a paper tag attached to it, a calling card of sorts, with the message "knitta, please!" or "whaddup knitta?"

These tags pop up every week, usually on Friday nights and Sunday mornings. But tonight is a special occasion: Poly's going out of town this weekend, visiting family and doing some West Coast bombing, so the women of Knitta are tagging on a school night. That is, they'll be tagging once Poly's husband gets home and can look after the kids.

Knitta is at the confluence of two rising cultural tides: crafting and street art. The former has been embraced by hipsters almost as much as bad haircuts: sites like Craftster.org boast 300,000 unique visitors a month; Stitch 'N Bitch groups are popping up all over. As for street art, it hasn't gotten so much respect since the days of Basquiat: Time and Esquire recently ran articles of praise; the Museum of Modern Art in New York has begun acquiring contemporary pieces.

"We're taking graffiti and making it warm, fuzzy and more acceptable," says AKrylik. "I like the duality there. Also, I really think there can be a lot more to the new, alternative knitting craze than meeting at the local coffee shop every Sunday afternoon to make scarves together -- not that I don't like to do that, too."

A toddler wearing diapers and stiletto boots greets Poly's husband when he gets back from the store. The hubby shakes his head, sits down in the kitchen and begins helping his daughter make a family tree for school. He plans to put photos of Divine, from the John Waters movies, in place of relatives whose pics can't be found. As he gets out the scissors and paste, Poly and AKrylik gather their things and hit the door.

Victim No. 1 is the owner of an SUV in the Museum District. Poly shoves a pink, white and blue cozy on the antenna, bending over just long enough for AKrylik to snap a photo for their Web site, www.myspace.com/knittaplease.

"You know, we have these friends with all these punk-looking little boys," jokes AKrylik. "We should just pay them to tag."

On the way to Westheimer they stop at the corner of Hawthorne and Dunlavy and revisit their greatest work so far: a stop-sign pole wrapped in a five-foot-tall orange-and-blue cozy. "We knotted it on," says AKrylik, "and it took forever."

Buttons, they've learned, are where it's at.

Poly stands guard while AKrylik puts a pink, red and gray swatch on the bike rack at Poison Girl; it's done faster than you can say "Christo." The duo then walks down that stretch of Westheimer that might as well be called Aerosol Alley.

"I've always wanted to have a nice, big, giant garage door and a sign that says, 'Graffiti away, if you're good,' " says AKrylik. "I love Gone and I love Next. Those are two really good taggers."

"I like it when it looks like there's effort, like, 'Man, somebody climbed up on that freeway pole,' " adds Poly.

They hop in the car, the Menil Collection their next target. But things get sidetracked when Poly's daughter calls, complaining about her schoolwork. "That damn family tree," Poly says afterward. "Why do they have to do that? We don't have pictures of grandmothers of ex-husbands."

After three quick stops -- a swatch on the rail of the Menil Bookstore, a cozy on the antenna of a Jetta and another swatch on a bench inside Rudyard's -- the duo pauses to take home a couple of pizzas to their kids, who've begun calling every ten minutes.

"I was thinking I'd yell at them and say, 'This is important to me!' " jokes Poly when they pull up to the house.

Their next stop is Memorial Park, where AKrylik plans to wrap a tree with the blue-and-green baby blanket she never finished. "I closed it off, put buttons on it and now it's a Knitta piece," she says, holding it up in the light.

After trudging down the path and waiting for joggers to pass, the women put up the four-foot-long swatch in less than a minute, only to decide it's not facing the right way. They take it down, wait for more runners to go by and put it up again.

On the way back to the car, they avoid patches of mud -- "If we were true gangstas, we wouldn't care," says AKrylik -- while bragging about past tags. They've done plenty of car antennae over the last two months -- men seem to remove the cozies faster than women -- and even wrapped the pay-phone cord by the Rudyard's bathroom.

"There's really no message or point," says AKrylik. "It's not an ideological experiment or anything -- just something we thought would be fun and funny at the same time."

These gangsta mamas have big plans: cozies for car bumpers, hats for fire hydrants, carpets for sidewalks and, if only they can get enough people, curtains for bridges and covers for water towers. They recently recruited five new members -- WoolFool, DJ Hooker, Loop Dogg, Purl Nekklas 14KT and GrannySQ -- and want Knitta eventually to become a Montrose icon.

"You know what it reminds me of, except that his things were a little more permanent?" asks AKrylik. "Chicken Boy. It reminds me of Chicken Boy's stuff, because some people know who he is, but for most people it's 'There's that chicken guy sticker.' "

A Chicken Boy cutout, complete with droopy face and coxcomb hat, hangs on the wall at Poison Girl, the bar where Poly and AKrylik return to the scene of their earlier crime. Since they know the owner, they're there for sport, wanting to slip a knit coaster under someone's drink without being noticed. But the bar's not as crowded as they'd like, so they give up and head for the door after one beer.

A doe-eyed bartender looks at them knowingly and says, "Did you see someone tagged our bike rack?"

"That sucks," says AKrylik, bluffing. "Now you're going to have to get a pressure washer to clean it up."

On the way out they throw down a coaster and place an empty beer bottle on top of it. Once outside, they burst into laughter, knowing it wasn't their best work but that it's time to head home.

After all, it's a school night.

Secretive "guerrilla" artist Banksy has decorated Israel's controversial West Bank barrier with satirical images of life on the other side.

The nine paintings were created on the Palestinian side of the barrier.

One depicts a hole in the wall with an idyllic beach, while another shows a mountain landscape on the other side.

Banksy's spokeswoman Jo Brooks said: "The Israeli security forces did shoot in the air threateningly and there were quite a few guns pointed at him."

RENO, Nev. - Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has suggested that those who deface freeways with graffiti should have their thumbs cut off on television.

Goodman, appearing Wednesday on the "Nevada Newsmakers" television show, said, "In the old days in France, they had beheading of people who commit heinous crimes.

"You know, we have a beautiful highway landscaping redevelopment in our downtown. We have desert tortoises and beautiful paintings of flora and fauna. These punks come along and deface it.

"I'm saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb," the mayor added. "That may be the right thing to do."

Goodman also suggested that whippings or canings should be brought back for children who get into trouble.

"I also believe in a little bit of corporal punishment going back to the days of yore, where examples have to be shown," Goodman said.

"I'm dead serious," said Goodman, adding, "Some of these (children) don't learn. You have got to teach them a lesson, and this is coming from a criminal defense lawyer."

"They would get a trial first," he added.

Another panelist on the show, Howard Rosenberg, a state university system regent, responded by saying that cutting off the thumbs of taggers won't solve the problem and Goodman should "use his head for something other than a hat rack."

Digital 'Antigraffiti' Peels Away the Years
By SARAH BOXER
Published: June 21, 2005

This month the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences awarded its annual Webby (the online equivalent of an Oscar) for the best art site to Graffiti Archaeology, grafarc.org, a pictorial study of graffiti-covered walls as they evolve. At first entry, the site looks like Batman's cave bathed in blue light. You go spelunking along a railroad track until you reach the heart of Graffiti Archaeology. There you will find a list of eight locations in California (most in San Francisco) where graffiti grows, gets erased and grows again.

The creator of the site, Cassidy Curtis, a San Francisco animator in his 30's, isn't just being cute when he calls it "graffiti archaeology." It really is archaeology. You start at the surface and then peel away layers to look into the past. When you choose one of the locales and pick which wall you want to see, you are shown a recent photograph first. Then you can move backward in time or hop around, using a timeline at the bottom of the page. You can also zoom in to see details and navigate around the surface of the walls.

In effect, Mr. Curtis has made antigraffiti. He uncovers the layers that each successive graffiti artist has covered up.

What's amazing is that Mr. Curtis, who was a character animator for the movie "Madagascar," constructed his archaeological site not by taking all the pictures himself (though he did take a lot of them) but by finding other photographers' work and stitching together a history. At the top of each picture is a label saying when the photograph was taken and by whom.

Take the case of the he Belmont Tunnel wall in Los Angeles. The most recent photograph, taken on Nov. 6, 2004, by Jonathan Tobin, shows huge letters, CAR, arched over a bricked-up tunnel. Below are blobby blue and white letters and, farther down, scribbles.

Peel a layer back, to August 7, 2004, and CAR is still there, but just about everything else is different. Instead of blobby blue letters, you see the blocky black and white letters, LSC, about to be flooded by a rising tide of shapes, colors and alphabetic flotsam.

Moving back through time, to March of 2004, you see that the word CAR is gone, replaced by DES. Two years earlier, CAR is there as part of an official-looking sign over the tunnel: RED CAR TUNNEL. Back in 2000 the word isn't CAR but CASH.

You can keep stripping away layers (there are 10 for this particular wall) until you get back to a picture of exactly the same place taken by Bill Volkmer in June 1955, before the tunnel had even been bricked over. The photo shows a train on the tracks with a placard bearing the words, "To Oblivion." Next to it a man stands at attention, the last conductor.

It seems that it took a while for graffiti to take up residence here. A photograph dated 1983 shows the tunnel blocked with bars rather than bricks. At the edge of this picture, you can see a band of youths climbing down from the hills to the tunnel. It looks like a historic moment: the first tribe of graffiti artists coming down to set up camp.

The whole spectacle of Graffiti Archaeology has a kind of protozoan beauty about it. The fiery flowery walls at Bluxome, a street in San Francisco, are particularly brilliant. Indeed, it makes you want to see Mr. Curtis's time-lapse collages turned into time-lapse movies.

But Graffiti Archaeology, for all its elegance and ingenuity, looks a bit lumpy. Since these photos come from various sources, Mr. Curtis, who put up the site a few years ago, had to correct for point of view so that he could stitch the photographs and superimpose them, one on the other, into a coherent history. "If a photo is shot from an angle, it must be stretched out into a trapezoid so the wall will look flat," he writes on his Web site.

Mr. Curtis also declares that he corrected for lighting, color and some obstructions: "If there's something in the way of the camera, I edit that out, which leaves irregular holes in the outline."

The site wears its methods on its sleeve. Each photograph is edged with a jagged orange line showing how it has been stretched and cropped and how it fits into the whole historical picture. It's nice to be able to see where each photo ends against the larger background, but it would be even nicer to have the option of erasing those jagged orange lines. You want to be able to see each year's wall unperturbed.

As for the holes in the wall's outline, you have to wonder whether it would have been better just to leave in the obstructions. Isn't it paradoxical that a site devoted to graffiti would have such a passion for purity?

The few extraneous things Mr. Curtis did leave in at the edges of some pictures - people, signs and parts of nearby buildings - are a relief. They give the site its few points of context, allowing time and history (not just graffiti history) to enter.

For the most part, though, these walls seem to float in a netherworld. It's hard to tell where they are. And there's no map provided. Graffiti Archaeology has a touch of anti-archaeology about it. What archaeologist would omit or obscure the context of his dig?

Which brings us back to the opening of the site. Maybe there's a reason that the welcome page looks like Batman's cave - forbidding, cut off from the rest of the world, with all kinds of cool stuff inside.

There's a battle going on for the soul of this site. Which will it be: archaeological dig, with all the context and transparency you could want, or mysterious grotto? Tune in and see for yourself. Same Bat time, same Bat channel.

Artist Reception and Opening Party
Creature Heroes
Recent work by Damon Soule, Matt Furie and NoMe
9pm - until

Mark your calendars now for the much anticipated art opening for "Creature Heroes" featuring new work by Damon Soule, Matt Furie and Nome. Celebrated San Francisco painter Damon Soule is one of the leading artists to emerge from the Bay Area's vibrant graffiti art scene. His mixed media works center around an imaginary comic universe with a widely-recognized cast of hybridized man/machine characters, each of whom continue to evolve, age and morph after nearly a decade. With exploding robots, cartoonlike animals, design riffs and urban automata, Soule's works capture the raw energy of urban life with invigorating style. This will be the artist's first exhibition since moving to New York nearly two years ago.

In addition, the show features new work by NoMe, who's formalist blob-like paintings explore the lyrical potential of graffiti and word-drawings. By abandoning the decipherable qualities or "hidden truth" of the graffiti text and focusing on the inter play of rhythmic form and pure color, the artist frees graffiti from language altogether making a kind of "sculptural creature" which owes as much to blob-design as to the discourse of urban art and graffiti writing.

Finally, local emerging artist Matt Furie makes very small and intricate drawings of his imaginary aliens, monsters, and oddly beautiful mise en sc?nes. In like manner, his cast of creatures extend beyond their often normalized settings, conjuring up familiar science fiction narratives and kitschy futuristic diasporas

9:00pm - until
Free
Preview the show during gallery hours starting June 10th every Thur-Sat 2pm-6pm
Show runs until July 7th

Yo graf peeps,

After about 4 months of painful crashes, upgrades, installs, reformats, etc. Stencil Archive is back online.

If ya don't know, stencilarchive.org was the first major site to go live with extensive international stencil pics. Most of the collection is in San Francisco, but most continents are represented.

After a few years of painful html-based updating, I decided to switch to a CMS format in Nov. of 2004. Then the problems started...

Well, the albums are back up, I have hundreds of backlogged pics to post, and submissions will kick in soon...

Hope you stop by and check it out:
http://stencilarchive.org/index.php

The stencil tribe is also available for more community fun!

thanks and keep the streets colorful,
russell h
