We're opening a new Cafe in Oakland and our site is under construction. There's a plywood barrier in front of the space right now that people are starting to tag and I thought it might be a nice place for a true artist to do some work. It will probably only be up for a few weeks, but if you are interested contact me directly at cortt (at) awakencafe (dot) com or through tribe. This is not a paying gig but it is a cool canvas in a central location...

Re: Wanted Graffiti artist
Fri, August 17, 2007 - 1:12 PMWhat is it about the graffiti that's already there that makes you want
to replace it with something done by a "true artist"? Is it possibly
just not the type of graffiti you want on your wall (throw-up or
otherwise)? Putting a call out for a "true" artist invalidates the
integrity of the pieces, and of the artists who have already left
their marks. Your statement glosses over one of the central tenets of
graffiti- self expression/identity; part of the nature of graffiti
and of it being "true" is that the artist isn't dictated by someone
else and both style and placement of pieces reflects
identity-expression.
You may be speaking about taste, but thats different from creating a
dichotomy between artists who are "real" and supposedly not.
